7 Can’t-Miss Things to Do on a Cruise Ship

Cruise Ship

A lot of people complain about being born at the wrong time; however, they completely disregard all the amazing opportunities that they wouldn’t have available if they had lived in the past. The level of hygiene, the quality of food, and the ability to access all the world’s knowledge via a device that we carry in our pockets are simply without precedent. The same thing goes with the concept of traveling the world via a luxurious cruise ship. Our ancestors would have killed for this opportunity, so why not use it? For those who do decide to follow through, here are a couple of things worth trying.

  1. Hanging Out by the Pool

Cruise ship pools are something else entirely and you have to experience them to see exactly what we mean by that. The pools themselves are a bit smaller than regular pools but the sheer sensation (and paradox) of being in a pool in the middle of an ocean is out of this world. It’s also worth mentioning that these pools are usually filled with chemically treated saltwater, which allows these pools to be drained every night and refilled every morning.

Now, some ship pools are filled with fresh water, however, these are a lot less common. If you’re extremely lucky, you’ll find a ship that has them both. Still, the pool itself is not as relevant as the poolside activity and this is usually a perfect blend of crowdy and desolate.

  1. Spend Quality Alone Time

Now, we must acknowledge the fact that you’re heading out for an adventure, however, you’re also hoping to fall off the radar for just a bit. Just think about it, you’re far away from your home and you can find an excuse to set your phone off, rendering it unavailable. You can then spend your day reading, getting a tan by the pool, working out, or just spending some quiet time contemplating life.

A cruise ship is just a perfect hybrid of civilization and a remote getaway. The majority of these ships have luxurious resorts within their complex but they’re also constantly in motion, which makes it impossible for anyone to keep track of you.

  1. Try Something New

You might not have been the type to indulge in luck-based games, however, some cruise ships have great on-board casinos that you can try visiting. It doesn’t even have to be a long-term thing if you’re afraid of developing an addiction or being judged by your peers. You can just stick to that old “what happens on a cruise ship stays on a cruise ship” principle.

You can use this for roleplaying purposes (pretending that you’re in a James Bond movie scene) and even take a step further by learning casino slang. Even a couple of basic phrases would do, seeing as how they will help elevate your immersion. Of course, this is just one of many examples.

  1. Stay in Shape

It’s easy to let yourself go while on a vacation. After all, you’re taking a break from work, taking a break from household chores, and taking a break from some people in your life. With that in mind, wouldn’t it make sense to take a break from restraint of any kind, as well as from your regular workout routine?

Well, keep in mind that this is not a good idea. Here, you’ll probably be less active by default and lead a bit more hedonistic lifestyle. The pool is usually not large enough for you to do laps, however, the majority of cruise ships have high-end gyms within the complex. So, why not make this a part of your daily routine and turn this cruise into a growth experience (in every sense of the word)?

  1. Schedule a Shore Adventure

The main reason why people go on a cruise is not because of the cruise ship itself. If that were the case, you could have easily found a better hotel with a better spa and even a bigger casino. The thing is that, on a cruise ship, you’re on a moving hotel that reaches a new destination every couple of days/weeks. This means that you have different beaches, different languages, and different customs every time you land.

Still, how much of this you get experience depends on your adventures. While on the ship, do your research on your next destination and plan for a couple of local activities. However, keep in mind that not everything is online. So, take some time to explore on foot and discover some activities the old-fashioned way.

  1. Duty-Free Shopping

Chances are that, in most harbors that you visit, the prices are going to be significantly lower than what you would have expected. So, you have the privilege of going on a buying spree with virtually no repercussions.

However, it gets even better. You see, while it’s true that each of these items may be of a bit lower quality, you need to keep in mind that they’re more than their physical form. Each of these items is a memento, an object that will help you remember the stop in question. As such, they’re worth every single penny.

  1. Go to a Spa

Every cruise ship out there has a spa. Now, you might have been to a spa so many times before but doing so and going to enjoy the sea breeze afterward is something else entirely. Just the idea that, a couple of centuries ago, the life of a sailor was filled with hard work and peril, whereas today, you get to traverse the globe in luxury, gives you a completely new perspective on life.

Keep in mind that this is just one of those activities that wouldn’t feel the same in a regular setting. We’re not suggesting that on-land spas are inferior in any way but one cannot deny that they’re different.

Wrap Up

In the end, it’s important that you understand that this is a journey that’s supposed to represent an adventure and a getaway. So, doing things you wouldn’t normally do is usually a good course of action. Explore your adventurous side and engage in hedonism on the same voyage.
